Step-by-Step: How to get an ARMED SORA License (Red)
Step 1 — Read official SORA materials & plan
Process
- Go to the NJ State Police SORA Help Page
- Read the following sections carefully:
- SORA Overview
- Security Officer Registration Act
- SORA Rules & Regulations
- Understand key details, including:
- Requirements for SORA certification.
- Time limits and deadlines.
- Documentation needed during the process.
Step 2 — Create a SORA account & submit the initial application
Process
- Open the NJSP SORA e-application portal:
- https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do
- “New Security Officer Application” → choose Armed Security Officer Certification
- (Or select “Change to Armed” if you already hold a SORA card)
- Complete the online application fully and accurately
- SORA Application ID
- Login credentials
- Submit payment for the SORA application fee (amount shown in the portal)
Step 3 — Schedule and complete fingerprinting / background check
Process
- After submitting your SORA application, you will receive:
- Terrorism Awareness
- Schedule your fingerprinting through IdentoGO (IDEMIA) or the vendor specified by NJSP
- Important: Use only the NJSP-provided fingerprint form/service code so results are sent to the correct agency
- Attend your fingerprint appointment with a valid photo ID
- Keep the receipt/confirmation from the appointment
- Fingerprint results are required for:
- SORA review
- Any handgun permit application
Step 4 — Complete the 24-hour SORA pre-assignment training
Process
- Enroll in and complete a state-approved 24-hour SORA training course from a NJSP-certified instructor
- Required for both unarmed and armed SORA
- Use of force principles
- Emergency response
- Observation & report writing
- Other core security topics
- Obtain the instructor-issued training completion certificate (PDF or paper)
- Upload the certificate to your SORA account (either by you or your instructor)
Step 5 — Apply for the Armed designation in SORA (if not done in Step 2)
Process
- Log into your SORA portal
- Go to New Applications
- Select Armed Security Officer Certification
- Follow the prompts to complete the application process
Step 6 — Complete state-approved firearms training & live-fire qualification
Process
- Enroll in an NJ-approved armed firearms course (classroom + live-fire range qualification)
- Must be taught by a qualified firearms instructor recognized by NJSP
- Complete the live-fire qualification to the instructor’s standard
- Obtain the Firearms Training / Qualification Certificate
- Armed SORA application file
- Handgun permit application
- Course content and allowable firearms are listed in the armed SORA FAQ and by approved training providers
Step 7 — Apply for New Jersey Permit to Carry a Handgun (separate & required)
Process
- To carry a firearm while working, you must apply for and be approved for the NJ Permit to Carry a Handgun
- Can be civilian or government permit, depending on your situation
- This is a separate application with its own:
- Forms
- Fees
- References
- Possible additional fingerprinting/photo requirements
- Copy of SORA card or SORA Application ID
- Firearms qualification certificate and training documentation
- Employer letter or proof of employment (for armed security officers)
- Passport-style photos, references, and any municipal forms required by your local PD
- Submit the handgun permit application as directed:
- Local police department OR NJSP online portal where applicable
- Follow up until approval is granted
Step 8 — Upload training docs & monitor NJSP review
Process
- Upload the following to your SORA account as instructed:
- 24-hour SORA training certificate
- Firearms qualification certificate
- Confirm that the uploads are successfully recorded in the NJSP portal
- Monitor your SORA portal email for:
- Follow-up requests
- Approval notices
Step 9 — Receive Armed SORA Certification & Carry Firearms
Process
- Once NJSP approves your application and documentation, you will receive your Armed SORA certification
- You can print or save the card
- When armed on duty, you must carry both:
- Armed SORA card
- NJ Permit to Carry a Handgun
- Do not carry a firearm based solely on the Armed SORA card
Step 10 — Ongoing Requirements, Training & Renewals
Process
- Certifications are time-limited
- Renewal timing differs for unarmed vs. armed SORA
- Armed status often requires more frequent renewal and ongoing firearms instruction
- Check NJSP for exact renewal intervals and refresher course requirements
- Annual firearms requalification is often required for armed officers
- Complete an annual block of instruction
- Maintain records of all training and qualification paperwork
